In the universe of rare Porsche 911s some are truly in a league of their own – of all the production 911s over the decades, the 964 Carrera 4 Lightweight or Leichtbau must be among the rarest with only 22 cars ever made. It was the vision of Jürgen Barth, legendary engineer and LeMans winning driver, who was the head of Porsche Customer Racing at the time. A review of the inventory in the motorsport department unearthed some spare four-wheel drivetrains from the wildly successful 953 Paris Dakar program – this system was way ahead of its time and allowed for the active adjustment of drive between the front and rear axles, as well as the degree of lock-up on the limited slip differential on the rear on “the fly”.
Mr. Barth knew that such a system could produce significant performance in a customer racing context. So, body shells of the 964 series 911 were taken off the production line, seam welded, with standard panels replaced with lightened equivalents; then, after installing the special 953 four-wheel drive system and a short ratio five speed transmission, they paired it with a naturally aspirated 265hp 3.6l flat six, the unit that ultimately became the engine in the famous 964 Carrera RS. This all combined to produce an awe-inspiring driving experience: super lightweight (1070kg), highly accelerative and responsive, but with elegant, subtle styling – a real ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing’.
964 001 is the most special of all the Carrera 4 Lightweights – a museum grade reference example, with many features unique to this car. These include: one off 934 ‘lollipop seats’ which later formed the basis for the seats in Ruf 911s; a bespoke Matter roll-cage; prototype gauges and four-wheel drive controls with labels that look like they were made by a 1980’s stationary store labelling machine; prototype fixtures and fittings to the engine and auxiliary systems, and several others. The car was initially sold to Kerry Morse, a close friend and collaborator of Mr. Barth’s. Other owners include:
- Frank Gallogly (Englewood, New Jersey)
- Dr William Jackson (Denver, Colorado)
- Ingram Collection
- Matthew F Ammirati (Bridgehampton, New York)
The car was bought by our client in 2017 and imported into the UK in 2022. It has covered just over 1,000 miles from new (the odometer is in kilometers) and is entirely original: all drive-train components match, the paint is original and in wonderful condition, all interior architecture and fixtures are present, correct and as new, although the original seats have been recovered in correct new old stock seat material. The car was fully serviced in 2024 by specialists Richard Tuthill, including a new set of Bridgestone tires. We invited Mr. Barth to visit us and be reunited with his masterpiece – it brought back very fond memories and set some of his experiences with the car in a bespoke report that forms part of the package that comes with the car.
